Combining Dhuhr and Asr at Arafah
al-Jam' bayna al-Dhuhr wa al-'Asr bi-'Arafah (jam' taqdim)
Overview
At 'Arafah on the 9th it is sunnah to pray Dhuhr and 'Asr together at the time of Dhuhr (jam' taqdim), each shortened to two units, freeing the rest of the day for standing and du'a.
Qur'an
No ayah of the Qur'an is cited for this act — the evidence for it is from the Sunnah. See the Hadith below.
Hadith
Then the adhan was called and then the iqamah, and he prayed the noon prayer (Dhuhr). Then he called the iqamah and prayed the afternoon prayer ('Asr), and he prayed nothing between the two.
Reference · Sahih Muslim 1218a
Grade · Sahih (Jabir's (RA) hadith, Sahih Muslim 1218a). Additionally, consensus that Dhuhr and 'Asr are joined at 'Arafah was reported by Ibn 'Abd al-Barr and Ibn Rushd.
Applies to
All Hajj types (Tamattu', Qiran, Ifrad) equally.
If missed
No penalty; the Hajj is valid and no dam is due. A pilgrim who prays Dhuhr and 'Asr each in its own time (instead of combining) has only left a Sunnah. For Hanafis who apply the imam-congregation condition, one who is not with the Hajj imam simply prays each at its own time — their normal ruling, not a deficiency.
Timing & place
After the sun passes the zenith (zawal / the start of Dhuhr time) on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah: Dhuhr is prayed, then 'Asr immediately after within the same (Dhuhr) time slot. Performed at or before the start of the Wuquf (standing).
'Arafah (the Prophet (ﷺ) prayed in the valley — the Masjid Namirah / Wadi 'Uranah area — then proceeded to the standing place).
Common mistakes
- •Praying voluntary/nafl prayers between Dhuhr and 'Asr — the Sunnah is to pray nothing between them.
- •Delaying 'Asr to its own time instead of bringing it forward with Dhuhr (jam' taqdim).
- •Not shortening — praying four rak'ahs instead of two-plus-two.
- •Praying before zawal (before the sun has passed the meridian).
- •Confusion among residents of Makkah over whether to combine/shorten (see "Across the madhabs").
Across the madhabs
Note: All four schools agree the pilgrim joins Dhuhr and 'Asr at Dhuhr time at 'Arafah; they diverge on the basis and conditions of this joining.
- •Hanafi: This is jam' haqiqi (real combining), which the Hanafis permit only at 'Arafah and Muzdalifah (they otherwise reject real combining, even in travel, allowing only jam' suri). Abu Hanifah's condition: the real combining at 'Arafah is valid only when praying in congregation behind the Imam of Hajj (at Namirah) and while in ihram; one who prays alone or outside that congregation should pray each in its own time or do jam' suri (Dhuhr at the end of its time, 'Asr at the start of its time). Abu Yusuf and Muhammad al-Shaybani, with the jamhur, do not require the imam condition.
- •Maliki: Sunnah to combine at 'Arafah for everyone present, by virtue of the Hajj ritual (nusuk) — whether led by the imam or praying individually.
- •Shafi'i: Recommended; the combining is treated as a concession of travel (safar), so it is for the traveler. The well-known view is that a resident of Makkah does not shorten as a resident, but at 'Arafah (outside Makkah) he may avail the travel concession. No imam-congregation condition.
- •Hanbali: Sunnah to combine (and shorten) at 'Arafah, following the Prophet's (ﷺ) practice; framed under the travel/nusuk concession, with no imam-congregation condition.
Notes
Procedure: one adhan, then an iqamah and Dhuhr shortened to two rak'ahs; then a second iqamah and 'Asr shortened to two rak'ahs immediately, with no prayer between them (Jabir (RA)). Combining (jam') and shortening (qasr) are two distinct acts that coincide here. Qur'an 4:103 ('Indeed, prayer is decreed upon the believers at specified times') is the textual basis Hanafis use to restrict 'real' combining to 'Arafah and Muzdalifah only. Contrast this jam' taqdim at 'Arafah (Dhuhr time) with the jam' ta'khir at Muzdalifah (Maghrib and 'Isha delayed to 'Isha time).
