All Rites, in the order performed for Hajj الحج

Every Pillar, Obligatory act and Sunnah of Hajj woven into one sequence — the order a pilgrim actually performs them, on the At-Tamattu' spine. Each act keeps its category colour, and the ring tracks your progress across all of them.

  1. Ghusl before Ihramالغسل للإحرامNo penalty whatsoever. The ihram is fully valid without it; omitting it means only forgoing a recommended sunnah (loss of its reward), with nothing owed and no effect on the validity of the Hajj or 'Umrah.
  2. Perfuming the body before Ihramالتطيب قبل الإحرامNo penalty. As a sunnah/mustahabb act, omitting it does not affect the validity of Hajj or Umrah and entails no dam and no fidyah.
  3. Two rak'ahs before Ihramركعتا الإحرامNo penalty. As a sunnah/mustahabb, omitting the two rak'ahs — or entering ihram without a preceding prayer — does not invalidate Hajj or Umrah and requires no dam and no fidyah.
  4. Ihram (entering the state of ritual consecration)الإحرامIhram is the gateway to all the rites: without assuming it there is no Hajj at all, so its total omission means no valid Hajj is performed, and it cannot be compensated by a dam (sacrifice). This is distinct from merely delaying ihram until after passing the …
  5. Entering Ihram from the Miqatالإحرام من الميقاتCrossing the miqat without ihram (while intending Hajj/Umrah) does not invalidate the Hajj, and ihram entered afterward is still valid. However it obligates a dam (sacrifice — a sheep slaughtered in the Haram and distributed to its poor) unless the pilgrim re…
  6. Reciting the Talbiyah frequentlyالتلبية (الإكثار من التلبية)For the recommended frequent repetition: no penalty (sunnah). For the Talbiyah itself: Hanafi — ihram is not validly convened without it (or a substitute dhikr / driving the hady); Maliki — a dam is due if omitted entirely; Shafi'i and Hanbali — no penalty, s…
  7. Etiquette of entering Makkah and Masjid al-Haram (ghusl before entering Makkah, entering the mosque with the right foot and its du'a, and du'a at the first sight of the Ka'bah)آداب دخول مكة والمسجد الحرامNo penalty. Omitting any of these acts does not affect the validity of Hajj or 'Umrah and requires no dam or fidyah — only the reward of the sunnah is missed. Ghusl for entering Makkah in particular is mustahabb by agreement of the scholars, with no fidyah fo…
  8. Staying at Mina on Tarwiyahالنزول بمنى يوم الترويةNo penalty; the Hajj remains valid and no dam is due. A pilgrim may proceed directly from Makkah to Arafah on the 9th; he only forgoes the Sunnah. (This is unlike the nights of Tashreeq at Mina, which are wajib and whose omission, per the majority, requires a…
  9. Not Fasting on the Day of Arafah (for the pilgrim)ترك صيام يوم عرفة للحاجNo penalty; Hajj is valid. If a pilgrim does fast at Arafah, both his fast and his Hajj are valid — he has simply left the preferable sunnah (and, per those who deem it makruh, done something disliked). No dam and no fidyah are due for fasting or for not fast…
  10. Standing (Wuquf) at 'Arafahالوقوف بعرفةMissing the Wuquf at 'Arafah entirely invalidates the Hajj (batil); it cannot be made up within the same year nor compensated by a dam. 'Whoever misses 'Arafah has missed the Hajj.' Such a person releases from ihram by performing the acts of 'Umrah and must r…
  11. Supplication (Du'a) at Arafahالدعاء بعرفةNo penalty (no dam, no fidyah) and Hajj remains valid; only the immense reward of supplication at this station is missed. Note the distinction: mere presence in Arafah within its time-window is the pillar — omitting that invalidates Hajj — but omitting or sho…
  12. Combining Dhuhr and Asr at Arafahالجمع بين الظهر والعصر بعرفة (جمع تقديم)No penalty; the Hajj is valid and no dam is due. A pilgrim who prays Dhuhr and 'Asr each in its own time (instead of combining) has only left a Sunnah. For Hanafis who apply the imam-congregation condition, one who is not with the Hajj imam simply prays each …
  13. Staying overnight at Muzdalifah (and the standing at al-Mash'ar al-Haram)المبيت بمزدلفة والوقوف بالمشعر الحرامMajority (wajib view): Hajj remains valid, but leaving Muzdalifah / failing to stop there without a valid excuse obligates a dam (sacrifice). Minority (rukn view — some Hanbalis, Ibn Khuzaymah, Zahiris): Hajj is invalid without presence at Muzdalifah. Those w…
  14. Combining Maghrib and Isha at Muzdalifah (jam' ta'khir)الجمع بين المغرب والعشاء بمزدلفة (جمع تأخير)No dam and no effect on the validity of the Hajj — combining the prayers is not a Hajj wajib whose omission is fined. Majority: praying Maghrib and 'Isha separately at their own times is permitted, one has only left a preferred Sunnah. Hanafi: one who prays M…
  15. Standing at al-Mash'ar al-Haram (Muzdalifah)الوقوف عند المشعر الحرام بالمزدلفةFor this sunnah standing/du'a specifically: no penalty, Hajj remains valid, only the reward is missed. However, omitting the underlying wajib mabit at Muzdalifah — i.e., leaving before its required time (before midnight, or before Fajr per the Hanbali) withou…
  16. Collecting the Jamarat pebblesالتقاط حصى الجمارAlso gathered at Mina for the Days of Tashriq (11–13 Dhul-Hijjah).
  17. Stoning the Jamarat (Ramy al-Jamarat)رمي الجمراتRepeated on the Days of Tashriq — all three Jamarat, in order, on 11–13.
  18. Saying Takbir with each pebble at the Jamaratالتكبير مع كل حصاة عند رمي الجمارSaid with every pebble, at each day's stoning.
  19. Hady (sacrificial animal for Tamattu' and Qiran)الهديWhoever is able but neglects it deliberately is sinful and the hady remains a debt he must still discharge. Whoever cannot afford it fasts three days during the Hajj and seven after returning home — ten in all (Qur'an 2:196). It does not, by itself, invalidat…
  20. Eating from one's Hady (sacrifice)الأكل من الهديNo penalty. Because eating is a recommended (mustahabb) act and not a condition, choosing not to eat and giving the entire hady away in charity is permissible per the majority and affects neither the validity of the hady nor of the Hajj; one simply forgoes a …
  21. Shaving or trimming the hair (Halq or Taqsir)الحلق أو التقصيرPer the three schools that hold it wajib, omitting it obliges a dam (sacrifice). Per the Shafi'i school (rukn), it cannot be compensated by any sacrifice — it must actually be performed, and until then the pilgrim does not fully exit ihram. In neither case is…
  22. Observing the Sunnah order of the rites on the Day of Nahr (Ramy of Jamrat al-'Aqabah, then Hady, then Halq/Taqsir, then Tawaf al-Ifadah)ترتيب أعمال يوم النحر: رمي جمرة العقبة ثم الهدي ثم الحلق أو التقصير ثم طواف الإفاضةThe Hajj is valid and, per the majority (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali), there is no penalty for performing the rites out of order — only the reward of the Sunnah sequence is missed. Per the Hanafi school, reversing the wajib order in certain cases (most notably a…
  23. Tawaf al-Ifadah (the tawaf of pouring-forth; also Tawaf az-Ziyarah)طواف الإفاضةThe Hajj is not complete without it, and it cannot be compensated by any sacrifice — it must eventually be performed, even years later. Until it is done the pilgrim remains under the ihram restriction on marital/sexual relations (the second, complete tahallul…
  24. Istilam of the Black Stone (touching, kissing, or pointing to al-Hajar al-Aswad)استلام الحجر الأسودNo penalty. Omitting the istilam does not affect the validity of the tawaf or the Hajj — only the reward of the sunnah is missed. (The tawaf must still begin from the Black Stone line regardless of whether one touches or points to it.)
  25. Raml and Idtiba' in Tawaf (brisk stepping in the first three circuits, and baring the right shoulder)الرمل والاضطباع في الطوافNo penalty on any school — the tawaf is fully valid without either act, and no dam, fidyah or repetition is due. Missing raml in one circuit is not made up by doing it in a later one. The only consequence is a lost merit. Idtiba' held outside its place — duri…
  26. Two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim (Prayer of Tawaf)ركعتا الطواف خلف مقام إبراهيمShafi'i and Hanbali: no penalty — a missed sunnah; the tawaf and Hajj are valid. Hanafi: sinful to omit deliberately but no dam, since the two rak'ahs remain owed and may be prayed at any later time. Maliki: for the obligatory tawaf, omission requires making …
  27. Zamzam etiquette after Tawafآداب شرب ماء زمزم بعد الطوافNo penalty. Drinking Zamzam and its etiquette are recommended, not obligatory: omitting them neither invalidates the Hajj/Umrah nor requires dam or fidyah. Only the reward of the Sunnah is missed.
  28. Clinging to the Multazam (iltizam al-Multazam)الالتزام بالملتزمNo penalty (it is a recommended act). Omitting the Multazam does not affect the validity of any tawaf or of the Hajj/'Umrah; only the virtue and reward of the recommended du'a-station are missed.
  29. Sa'i between Safa and Marwahالسعي بين الصفا والمروةMajority (Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali): Hajj/Umrah is not valid or complete without sa'i; it cannot be replaced by a dam. The pilgrim remains in ihram until it is performed. Hanafi: Hajj remains valid, but omitting sa'i (or omitting four or more of its seven cir…
  30. Staying overnight at Mina during the nights of Tashreeq (Mabit bi-Mina)المبيت بمنى ليالي التشريقRequires a dam (a sheep/goat, or one-seventh of a camel or cow, slaughtered in the Haram and given to the poor) per the three madhabs that classify it wajib; no penalty per the Hanafi school (which deems it sunnah). It never invalidates the Hajj, since it is …
  31. Standing for supplication after the first two Jamaratالوقوف للدعاء بعد رمي الجمرتين (الصغرى والوسطى)After the first two Jamarat, on each Day of Tashriq (11–13).
  32. Hastening the departure from Mina after two days (nafr awwal) or delaying it to the third day (nafr thani)التعجل في يومين أو التأخر إلى اليوم الثالث من أيام التشريق (النفر الأول والنفر الثاني)No penalty attaches to the choice itself — the pilgrim freely picks either departure. A penalty arises only if a required stoning is then abandoned: taking the early departure (nafr awwal) is valid only if the pilgrim has completed stoning all three jamarat o…
  33. Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada')طواف الوداعDoes not invalidate the Hajj. Per Hanafi/Shafi'i/Hanbali, leaving it without a valid excuse requires a dam (a sheep/goat slaughtered within the Haram and given to the poor). Per Maliki, no penalty. Menstruating and postpartum (nifas) women are exempt entirely…
