Two rak'ahs before Ihram

ركعتا الإحرام

Rak'ata al-Ihram

SunnahMark done

Overview

It is recommended to pray two units (rak'ahs) before assuming ihram — most strongly, to enter ihram straight after an obligatory prayer, as the Prophet () did after Dhuhr at Dhul-Hulayfah.

Qur'an

Not applicable — no direct ayah prescribes a prayer before ihram; the basis is the Prophet's () practice (Sunnah) and analogy (qiyas).

Hadith

The Prophet () entered ihram after praying: narrated Anas (RA): the Prophet () prayed four rak'ahs of Zuhr at Medina and two rak'ahs of 'Asr at Dhul-Hulayfah, stayed overnight, then rode — reaching al-Bayda' — recited the talbiyah for Hajj and Umrah., narrated Anas (RA) (Sahih): 'the Messenger of Allah () prayed Zuhr... then he mounted... and he began the Talbiyah for Hajj and Umrah when he had prayed Zuhr.' Cited by those recommending a prayer before ihram: narrated Umar (RA) in the valley of al-'Aqiq: 'a messenger came to me from my Lord and asked me to pray in this blessed valley and to assume Ihram for Hajj and Umra together.' Note: no explicit hadith prescribes a distinct 'two rak'ahs of ihram'; it is inferred from the Prophet () entering ihram after the Zuhr prayer.

Applies to

All Hajj types — Tamattu', Qiran, Ifrad — and Umrah. No count difference between the types.

If missed

No penalty. As a sunnah/mustahabb, omitting the two rak'ahs — or entering ihram without a preceding prayer — does not invalidate Hajj or Umrah and requires no dam and no fidyah.

Timing & place

Immediately before forming the intention (niyyah) and reciting the talbiyah for ihram, at the miqat. If an obligatory prayer is due, one prays it and enters ihram afterward; otherwise two rak'ahs (e.g., the two rak'ahs of wudu / a nafl) are prayed before entering ihram.

At the Miqat — e.g., the masjid at Dhul-Hulayfah / one's designated miqat — or wherever one enters the state of ihram.

Common mistakes

  • Believing the two rak'ahs are obligatory and that ihram is invalid without them.
  • Insisting on a special 'ihram prayer' when praying the due obligatory prayer and entering ihram afterward already fulfils the sunnah.
  • A menstruating/postnatal woman thinking she cannot enter ihram because she cannot pray — she still enters ihram without praying.
  • Adding extra nafl beyond what is established or delaying ihram to seek a specific prayer time.

Across the madhabs

Point of agreement: all four madhabs hold it is mustahabb to enter ihram after praying (dorar.net: 'It is mustahabb to enter into ihram after praying. This is by agreement of the four schools of jurisprudence'). Point of divergence — is there a prayer specific to ihram? Hanafi, Maliki, and the well-known Shafi'i and Hanbali positions: two rak'ahs of ihram (rak'ata al-ihram) are recommended, unless one enters ihram right after an obligatory prayer, which suffices. Contrary view: ihram has no prayer specific to it — one simply enters ihram after an obligatory prayer if one is due; held by some Shafi'is and a narration from Ahmad, and chosen by Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Albani, Ibn Baz and Ibn 'Uthaymin.

Notes

The most strongly evidenced practice is entering ihram after an obligatory prayer, as the Prophet () did after Zuhr at Dhul-Hulayfah (Bukhari 1551; Nasa'i 2755). There is broad agreement that praying before ihram is good; the dispute concerns only whether a dedicated 'ihram prayer' exists. A related Maliki nuance: entering ihram (uttering the talbiyah) is timed to when the mount rises to set off, rather than immediately upon finishing the prayer.
