Conditions for a valid Tawaf (Shurut sihhat al-Tawaf)
Shurūṭ Ṣiḥḥat al-Ṭawāf
Overview
These are the conditions that make any tawaf valid — such as ritual purity, covering the body, completing all seven circuits, and keeping the Ka'bah on one's left starting from the Black Stone. They are separate from the recommended manners of tawaf.
Qur'an
- •وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا بِالْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ'and let them perform tawaf around (circle) the Ancient House.'
And We charged Abraham and Ishmael: Purify My House for those who circle it (al-ta'ifin), those who stay for worship, and those who bow and prostrate.'

Hadith
Tawaf around the House is (like) salah, except that you may speak during it.Reference · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 960Grade · Sahih (al-Albani, Sahih al-Tirmidhi; Ibn 'Abbas (RA), 'tawaf is salah'). Some critics hold the sounder route mawquf on Ibn 'Abbas (RA) rather than marfu'.
Do what the pilgrim does, except do not perform tawaf around the House until you become pure — said to 'Aishah (RA) when she menstruated during Hajj.References · Sahih al-Bukhari 294 · Sahih Muslim 1211Grade · Sahih — muttafaq 'alayh ('Aishah's (RA) menstruation hadith)
He began with the Black Stone and touched it, [kept the House on his left,] hastened (ramal) in three circuits and walked in four ... Pray in the Hijr if you wish to enter the House, for it is only a portion of the House.References · Sunan Abi Dawud 2028 · Jami' at-Tirmidhi 876 · Sunan an-Nasa'i 2912Grade · Sunan Abi Dawud 2028: Sahih (al-Albani; the Hijr hadith — the Hijr is part of the House), Jami' at-Tirmidhi 876: Sahih (al-Albani; the Hijr hadith), Sunan an-Nasa'i 2912: Sahih (al-Albani; the Hijr hadith)
For Umrah
These conditions govern tawaf al-'Umrah exactly as they govern the tawafs of Hajj — same seven circuits, same start and end at the Black Stone, same requirement to pass outside the Hijr, same majority requirement of purity from hadath. The purity condition is the one with the sharpest practical consequence in 'Umrah: a woman who menstruates before performing the tawaf cannot perform it, and so remains in ihram until she is pure — she does not skip it and she does not lose the 'Umrah.
Applies to
All three Hajj types (Tamattu', Qiran, Ifrad) and 'Umrah. The validity conditions are the same for every tawaf; only the Number of tawafs a pilgrim performs differs by Hajj type (e.g. a Mutamatti' performs a tawaf for his 'Umrah and again Tawaf al-Ifadah for Hajj).
If missed
If a mechanical condition is missing — fewer than seven circuits, starting/ending other than at the line of the Black Stone, keeping the Ka'bah on the right, or passing inside the Hijr of Isma'il — the tawaf is invalid and must be repeated; where the tawaf is the pillar (Tawaf al-Ifadah), the Hajj is not complete until it is validly performed. For purity/'awrah specifically: the tawaf is invalid and must be repeated per Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali, whereas per the Hanafi school it counts as valid but obligates a dam (major impurity) or sadaqah (minor hadath).
Timing & place
The conditions themselves are not time-bound; they apply to every tawaf. The individual tawafs have their own windows — Tawaf al-Ifadah is tied to after the Wuquf at 'Arafah, Tawaf al-Qudum ends at the Wuquf, and Tawaf al-Wada' is the last act before departure — but the validity conditions in this entry are identical for each.
Al-Masjid al-Haram, Makkah — the seven circuits are performed around the Ka'bah, outside the Hijr of Isma'il, and are valid anywhere within the mosque however far from the Ka'bah, provided the circling encompasses the whole House.
Common mistakes
- •Passing between the Hijr of Isma'il (the Hatim) and the Ka'bah instead of circling outside the Hijr — this shortens the circuit and invalidates it
- •Starting or ending a circuit other than at the line of the Black Stone
- •Keeping the Ka'bah on the right (wrong direction)
- •Mis-counting the seven circuits
- •Continuing tawaf after wudu has broken (invalid for the majority)
- •Believing that ordinary speech, or a phone call, invalidates tawaf (it does not — only major/minor hadath and the mechanical breaches do)
Across the madhabs
Point of divergence: The chief four-madhab split is over whether ritual purity (and covering the 'awrah) is a condition of validity or only wajib. Genuine divergence: the Hanafis alone treat purity/satr as wajib (valid-but-dam) rather than a condition of validity; the other three treat them as conditions. All four agree on the core mechanical conditions — seven circuits, starting and ending at the Black Stone, keeping the Ka'bah on the left, and circling outside the Hijr of Isma'il.
- •Hanafi: Purity from hadath (and covering the 'awrah, and freedom from najasah) is wajib, not a condition. A tawaf done in a state of minor impurity is valid but deficient and obligates a sadaqah; done in major impurity (janabah/haydh) it is still counted valid but is sinful and obligates a dam (badanah), and it is recommended to repeat it while still in Makkah. Muwalat (continuity) between circuits is sunnah.
- •Maliki: Purity from major and minor hadath, removing najasah, and covering the 'awrah are conditions of validity — an invalid tawaf must be repeated. Muwalat (continuity) is a condition. Walking for one who is able is wajib (dam if omitted without excuse). Niyyah of the tawaf is required.
- •Shafi'i: Purity from hadath and najasah and covering the 'awrah are conditions of validity (tawaf is likened to salah). Muwalat is sunnah, not a condition (a valid tawaf may be resumed after an interruption).
- •Hanbali: Purity from hadath and najasah and covering the 'awrah are conditions of validity (relied-upon view). Muwalat/tartib (consecutiveness) is required. Walking for the able is wajib, not a condition.
Notes
The talbiyah having ceased, the two rak'ahs of tawaf behind Maqam Ibrahim, istilam of the Black Stone and Yemeni corner, drinking Zamzam, and specific du'a are recommended acts (sunan/adab) of tawaf, not conditions of validity. Tawaf al-Ifadah is one of the three acts of the tahallul (with ramy al-'Aqabah and halq/taqsir), so a valid tawaf is also load-bearing for exiting ihram. See the linked items tawaf-ifadah, tawaf-qudum, tawaf-wada, istilam, and tahallul-first/second.
